Obituary of Msgr. James F. Campbell

Born in Buffalo, NY on September 9, 1930 and passed away on June 4, 2025. Predeceased by his parents James W. and Mildred (nee Sutton) Campbell and his brother William H. Campbell. Uncle of Beth Ann and James. F. Campbell, also survived by cousins and friends. Msgr. Campbell graduated from Buffalo State Teachers College in 1952. He served in the US Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict. He joined the Buffalo Fire Department in 1956 after completing his military service. Msgr. Campbell entered the priesthood in 1964, after graduating from the American College in Louvain, Belgium. During his life as a priest, he served several parishes in the WNY area, including being the pastor of Queen of Heaven in West Seneca, NY. In addition, he dedicated many years to the education of the children of Buffalo from being in the classroom teaching the history of the US, which he loved, to being the Principal at Bishop Turner High School, culminating in being appointed Superintendent of the Catholic Schools, a role he held for several years. He spent the remainder of his active diocesan years as rector of St. Joseph's Cathedral supporting three Bishops of Buffalo. At various times in his career, Msgr. Campbell has been Chaplain to the Buffalo Fire Department, Buffalo Police Department and the FBI. He also was a long time member of the Buffalo Yacht Club. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital, Buffalo Historical Society or Catholic Charities. Friends and family may visit on Tuesday, June 10th from 3-7:00pm at the JAMES W. CANNAN FUNERAL HOME, 3155 Orchard Park Road in Orchard Park (716) 675-9027. There will be a visitation hour on Wednesday, June 11th from 9:30AM-10:30AM at St. Joseph's Cathedral, 50 Franklin St., Buffalo, NY 14202 where a Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10:30AM.
