Obituary of Jeanne A. Joseph
Please share a memory of Jeanne to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Jeanne Anne Joseph (née Carey)
January 1946 – September 2025
Jeanne Anne Joseph of Orchard Park, New York, the unwavering advocate for and matriarch of her sprawling and beloved family, passed away surrounded by loved ones in the early hours of Thursday, September 4th, 2025 at South Buffalo Mercy Hospital. She was 79.
Jeanne entered the world in that same hospital on a blustery January day in 1946, the firstborn of nine children to Marjorie (Leary) Carey and John “Jack” Carey, a World War II veteran newly returned from Europe.
She attended Saint Bonaventure Elementary School and Mount Mercy Academy, and, even as she ran a bustling household, later earned her Associate’s Degree in Business Administration from Erie Community College.
Jeanne's early years as a single mother of three were marked by resilience and determination. Then, at 22, she met and married James "Jim" Joseph and three more children came along. Jeanne and Jim built a life full of laughter, hard work, and deep devotion to their six children: the late Teresa "Terry" Smith, Patrick "PJ" (Maria) Smith, Kelly (Donnie Smalt) Asher, James "Jim" (Mary Kelkenberg) Joseph, John (Natalie) Joseph, and Janine Joseph. Her love and devotion extended to 19 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, each of whom she championed fiercely, whether they needed a dose of humility or a lift of encouragement — Jeanne always knew which was called for. Jeanne and Jim celebrated their 57th anniversary last month.
In the 1980s, Jeanne and her sister Pat founded PJ’s Instant Replay, a consignment sporting goods store in the Village of Orchard Park, blending entrepreneurial spirit with community connection. She later thrived in real estate, helping countless Southtowns families find their homes over a vibrant 15-year career.
Retirement didn’t slow her down. Jeanne was a fixture at the Orchard Park Country Club, where she played golf, bridge, and held court with her signature wit. Jeanne was a parishioner at Saint Bernadette Catholic Church, cherished her relationship with God, and ceaselessly petitioned Him to protect her loved ones and the world.
Jeanne’s siblings — late John "Jack" (Kathleen) Carey, late Timothy Carey, Patricia (William) Gascoyne, Margaret "Gayle" (Robert) Balko, late Susan "Susie" Carey-Metzger, Joan (Tim) Hoar, Sheila (Paul) Hammond, and Michael (Beth) Carey—formed the roots of a family tree that Jeanne nurtured with loyalty and love.
She was an insatiable reader, a writer of poetry and short stories, and a woman whose intellect sparkled as brightly as her humor. Her presence was magnetic, her support inexhaustible, and her legacy indelible.
Jeanne Anne Joseph leaves behind a family shaped by her strength, humor, and boundless heart. She will be deeply missed and forever cherished.
