Obituary of Michael W. Glavey
Please share a memory of Michael to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Michael was born and raised in South Buffalo to Jack and Kathy Glavey. He entered this world with his twin sister Maureen and they joined siblings Karen, Kathleen, and John. They were built in playmates from the start and enjoyed an amazing, fun filled childhood with the gang of kids in their Britt neighborhood. There were endless days playing outside – hide and seek, kick the can, football, street hockey, riding bikes, building forts and a lot of shenanigans. Before even starting kindergarten, Mike met two of his cherished lifelong friends, Bernie Sheehan and Danny Redmond. Michael was also surrounded by a gaggle of dear cousins with whom he also shared many happy memories.
Michael was a graduate of St. Martin's and Bishop Timon High School. In each of those places his army of loyal friends grew – Matt, Garrett, Jimmy, Dave, Joe, and many, many more. He was blessed to have these become lifelong friendships as well. Being twins, Michael's and Maureen's friend groups melded as they all enjoyed many experiences and a good dose of tomfoolery, which ramped up even more when John and his group of friends joined.
Raised by hardworking parents, Michael always demonstrated a strong work ethic. He was his father's sidekick and trusted apprentice from an early age. His masterful carpentry skills seemed intuitive due to the example of his dad. Michael quickly went from building forts to building kitchens, bathrooms, and many other house projects at an early age. He always worked: he had a paper route, did odd jobs, was a lifeguard and laborer. He worked at the Aud and Pilot Field. Michael attended Erie Community College, was on the Dean's List, and earned a certificate in Building Rehabilitation. Once he started working construction as a carpenter, he continued to work nights at the Aud.
Mike joined the Carpenters Union and greatly appreciated being mentored by craftsmen who became dear friends and in turn he became an attentive mentor to others. For the last 25 years, he worked at UB and was the carpenter foreman until his unexpected illness in November 2025. Mike was very fortunate to have co-workers he also called friends. His work was extremely important to him and he felt lucky that he shared it with many treasured friends along the way.
Mike and Jennifer met in high school, attending Mercy and Timon dances together. A number of years later they reunited, started dating, and were married in 1998. Together they raised a beautiful family and provided a loving home for their children, Mikey and Allie. They shared many joyful years filled with family events and celebrations. Michael especially loved their family vacations to Indian Rocks, Florida, game days at Clemson, and trips to Boston. He was immensely proud of his children and was an incredibly devoted father. He was so proud to have Mikey as his sidekick, taking him everywhere, always patiently helping and guiding him, and always finding joy with him. Michael loved and adored Allie and beamed with pride especially with her success at Clemson, her world travels, and her comfort in navigating new places and challenges. Mike was always encouraging and supportive, even in their architect vs carpenter debates.
Everyone enjoyed being around him – especially the Glavey and Weimer siblings and their families. He was loving Uncle Mike to Jack, Michael and Sean Kane; Sam and Mary Grace Glavey; Bridget and Maura Dougherty, Danny Overdorf; Katie, Jon, Ben, Jake, Zach, Mick, and Matt Weimer; and Christie Jackson. Mike was so very happy to recently enjoy Christie's beautiful wedding to Zach.
Mike's was a life marked by hard work, kindness, laughter, great stories, care giving, and love. He has left an example for many, the bar set high (and level!) to be the best son, brother, husband, father, uncle, and friend. Words cannot capture how deeply he will be missed.
