Back when Kevin was young, he and I spent a lot of time hiking and camping at local parks and campgrounds. One of our favorite places was Red House Lake in Allegany State Park. We liked lit because the trails were gentle and the views were beautiful. We typically stayed in one of the cabins, but on one particular trip we decided it would be adventurous to spend the night in a tent. Everything was going well as we enjoyed an evening under the stars - until about 4:00 am, when a storm rolled in complete with thunder, lightning and heavy rain. We seemed perfectly positioned to catch as much rain as possible. Once we decided to bail and give up on camping, we packed up and made the trip back to Kevin's house, where Marilyn greeted us at the front door. She brought us inside, got us warmed up and treated us to some snacks. Needless to say, that was our last outdoor camping adventure together.

Fritz was exactly what each person needed him to be, whether it be throughout the course of your friendship with him, or something as simple as a brief conversation. For myself and his closest friends who simply love to laugh, a Fritz appearance was always going to be exactly that at some point. You would laugh to the point of not realizing you had yourself a quality abdominal workout. From putting on a random one-man play in the college dorms or a local establishment… to out of control rounds of knee hockey… to reminiscing about his insanely hilarious stories of his early employment history… to a random dance party where everyone was required to hold onto an inanimate object (we never danced so enthusiastically with decorative vases in hand)… to hilarious movie references… to a “new move” he’d convince you to try in public… to his recent appearance at an annual Memorial Day party where he showed up with one pint of strawberries and proceeded to give each guest precisely ONE strawberry… to made-up games, competitions, stories, names, and on and on and on… Kev made you forget your worries because it was simply time to laugh.
My wife always said there’s something ridiculous about my laugh when reading a Fritz text. It was easy for her to know when I got one. He helped you feel frozen in your youth, to a time in your life when perhaps it was considered more acceptable to act silly… even now as we’re well into our 40’s. There was something comforting about getting a card or message from Kev on your birthday… with a picture of the Predator monster from the 1987 Schwarzenegger film and the simple message – “I hope you don’t get your spine ripped out today. Happy Birthday, buddy!” The laughs always kept coming.
But he was also so much more than that when you needed him to be. He was so very smart, thoughtful, empathetic, kind. He had the best conversations with you. He cared about what you had to say and genuinely talked to you. He was the exact conversation you needed at that moment. What you said mattered. You know he cared when he asked you that simple question, “How are you?” I know so many of you can hear him asking you that right now.
To his best buddies at Bishop Timon, he was an honorary member of the 70’s Club during Course 3 Math. This was a group of students struggling with trigonometry. He didn’t need to be there. His average was always in the 90’s or better, but he taught the material to his classmates better than the actual teacher.
Pass by the Timon Math Lab during Kevin’s first experience as a professional educator, and you might see super bouncy balls flying at the wall that Kevin was defending. No, not because he had poor classroom management. It was their incentive for successfully completing their math work.
To his students and colleagues, he was so much more than his title. Just take a few minutes to read some of the posts on social media from former students and colleagues, or the messages left by students on his doorway following his passing… and you’ll see it. It’s moving. There’s a ridiculous joke that’s pretty commonly directed towards educators – “Those who can’t do… teach. Those who can’t teach… teach phys. ed.” Kevin embodied the opposite and proved each and every day that… “Those who CAN DO… teach.”
We all assumed Kevin was a great educator, but sadly it took his passing to learn he was in fact a legend. It was his humble nature that hid this fact from those close to him. The true extent of his character goes beyond even that. He was a father figure, mentor, voice of reason and compassion, and to no one’s surprise - comedian to his students. He was the voice who believed in them when they didn’t believe in themselves, helping them achieve when they never believed they’d see personal academic success.
Kevin embodied the idea of lifelong learner, a mantra of all teachers. He continued to take physics classes up until his final days. He already knew EVERYTHING to all of us, but still yearned to learn more.
May we all strive to be a little more like Fritzy – successful yet humble, impactful in the lives of others, a good son or daughter, a guide to someone having a hard time, an ear to listen, a partner, a friend, a best friend, a source of laughter… May we all remember to laugh, big boisterous belly laughs like Kevin, each day. Laugh on, dear friend! We all look forward to hearing that wonderful laugh again. Love you!!!

Kevin, I don’t even know where to start. There’s not enough space here to say everything I wish I could say.
You had this presence about you—your intelligence, your quick wit, your sense of humor, and your laugh… I can still hear it, we all can. You meant so much to so many people, especially your students. You made math fun, which is mostly impossible except for you.
From the moment I first met you, I was in awe of your incredible memory. The way you could remember sporting events, random moments, exact days—even the year—and it could have been 10+ years ago. It was honestly unmatched. You were my reference, my guide. If I didn’t know something, I just asked you. I still will.
I love how everyone I mean everyone you met has a Fritz story. Every single one somehow funnier than the last. And we’ll continue to share them.
You were always there for me. No matter what. Just like you were always there for your students and especially for your mom. You are such an incredible son. The way you showed up for her, cared for her, and loved her says everything about the amazing person you are. You are one of the most genuine people I’ve ever known—honest, loyal, and always doing the right thing.
You weren’t with us nearly long enough but were always wise beyond your years and yet still silly and fun. Also, so smart, so funny, so handsome.
I pray that you still help me and guide me because I feel lost without you. A lot of us do.
Thank you for every laugh, every smile, every memory. I miss you more than I can put into words, but I’ll carry you with me always. Until we meet again…

Dear Kev-Our hearts are broken. It is truly hard to believe that we don’t have more time together. We will always remember the way you made us laugh, your intelligence, your kindness, how much you cared about others, and your hilarious, fun loving personality that made our lives brighter. It was an honor to have you as a friend. You made everything more fun and everyone feel loved. We will miss you terribly, but you will forever live on in our hearts and in all of the amazing memories we’ve shared. We will love you always, Fritz!

Hey buddy, the right words are really hard to come by in this moment. The flood of memories that have come rushing back since this tragic news arrived seem overwhelming, disorganized, from a world away. Yet, all these memories from 25+ years of friendship, all the laughs we shared, parties we went to at Bona's, the ridiculously funny names for games and/or plays that you created, the serious and simultaneously unserious conversations that we had, the moments you were there for: groomsman in my wedding, gender reveals and baptisms of my kids, Memorial Day parties of years past; all these memories and more, fit perfectly and harmoniously into our own unique tapestry that I will forever be thankful and honored to have traversed with you. You were fond of a saying somewhat to the effect of a second, or a series of seconds, can make a moment, and a moment, can change your life. Well, I don't remember the exact second, or series of seconds, that we became great friends back at Bona's, but I will be eternally grateful for them and the lasting impact those seconds have since had on my life; and while I may have forgotten those exact seconds, I will never, ever forget the times that we had, the way you made us laugh, the person that you were. Rest easy, my friend.

Kev-our dear friend. It's difficult to fathom this immeasurable loss. You were brilliant, yet so humble. You were multi-faceted-a passionate, beloved teacher, a gifted story-teller, a lover of math and of movies, a natural comedian, and a loyal friend. You were one of the rare warm individuals who was genuinely interested in others. We will forever miss your boisterous, infectious laugh, and your hilarious personality. Your memory will live on through Greg, Ben, and Kris' countless stories of you, at every future gathering.
Kev-"Some people shine too brightly to ever be forgotten". We will love you always. Until we meet again "brah".

Our Dearest Kev - Cherished Nephew and Godson
There are no words to express how much we love and miss you. There are so many wonderful memories that we share. When you were young I used to take you as my guest to our Company Picnics. I enjoyed showing you off! We had so much fun together! Remember how I used to search far and wide in every possible toy store to find that one transformer you absolutely had to have for your birthday and Christmas gifts?
All the countless birthday parties, Christmas dinners and gift exchanges and family gatherings will forever be remembered and treasured. Talking Bills and Sabres was always a topic of conversation. You knew how much I loved my home teams even though your favorite teams were the NY Giants and Pittsburgh Penguins.
Tom loved discussing school with you. He so enjoyed hearing your teaching techniques and experiences in the classroom. You were such an awesome teacher, Kev. The absolute best. Some even called you the GOAT! Everyone was so proud of the way you helped your kids and cared so much for them and wanted them to do well.
Thank you for the tutoring you gave Emily when she was taking Geometry in HS. It was a difficult subject for her and you helped her understand the concepts and guided her through the problems. You helped her so much!
Kev, you have impacted the lives of so many family members, friends, students and teachers. You will be remembered forever and always.
God Bless You and may the Angels in Heaven watch over you eternally.
Love, Inez, Tom and Emily

May Kevin (Mr. Fritz's) Memory Be Eternal. He guided Olmsted students through the dark days of the Pandemic, my son included. Made them feel confident they could persevere through that difficult time and welcomed them back to school to start making life normal again. What a gift that was for his students and their parents. Our family sends condolences and love to his family and the Olmsted family. Prayers, Nicole Skaros Marcello

We met Freshman year at St. Bonaventure and bonded quickly over our sense of humor, taste in music, similar interests, and just trying to figure out college. You were friendly, welcoming, and easy going. I remember the big laughs, eating at the Hickey & RC Cafe, going to concerts & basketball games, and the great conversations. I admired your sincerity, thoughtfulness, intelligence, and curiosity. It makes me sad to think you’re gone but l’m grateful for our time together. Much love.

I owe my career to you. You took me in as a student teacher when you were going through the roughest time of your career. We worked in the morning at Emerson and then went to South Park. We endured Sy on FB live during the lesson, Sal slapping the calculators on the desk repeatedly, and someone (won’t say who) HEAVING a desk across the room. You helped me realize the true value of an exit ticket. You taught me QR codes! You made the most inappropriate joke at the worst time, and it has been our joke for a DECADE. A DECADE KEVIN! You were there to take my calls when I won First Year Teacher of the Year, Teacher of the Year, The Golden Apple, and Department Head. You were there for the bad times.
But you were more than my cooperating teacher. You were my friend until the end. Whether we talked hockey or football, or hung out at your loft, you got me a McDavid gift, and I got you a Crosby jersey. When I think of you, I think of the collection of seconds that formed these everlasting bonds, how you often told me how proud of me you are, and how I should have told you time and time again, that I am a product of you. How, that STUPID movie “The Disaster Artist” was another one of our running jokes. How no matter what, we would be forever linked.
The effect you had on me cannot be overstated. And I do know this for a fact, the effect you had on former students lives cannot be overstated. While this is the only picture we ever took, the memories we created are countless. I was PROUD to call you my friend, each and every day. I will keep your legacy living on in my classroom. Rest easy, Kevin, and when you get there, do what we do best and recreate that scene in the movie for us. I know you will. I keep hoping I wake up from this nightmare and that your name will pop up on my phone again. I love you bro!

Q: How did you meet Kevin?
A: Kevin was one of my students at Bishop Timon during my time as Principal. I remember him so well. He was a kind you young man, always with a smile and one of the top academic minds in his class. He was a math wizard and his math teachers loved having him in class. He came from a beautiful family and his mom was so proud of him. Heaven has gained a truly gentle soul. I wish we had more time with Kevin. He will be greatly missed.

Mr Fritz was a teacher that when you went to his class there was no judgement, no yelling, and every day there was laughter and smiles. He treated his students as if they were his own kids. He loved and prioritized us so much and never failed to help up. If we were struggling he was the one to go to because he always had a way to solve it. I still can’t even believe that he is gone and it’s so hard to go to school knowing we will never talk to him ever again. He always had his students In mind and he will forever be missed by many. Despite geometry being a challenging course I always loved that class and though I did not enjoy doing math I always looked forward to learning from him, he brought a passion and great effort to teaching that I wish I put more effort into. And even beyond class with him he always felt like a pillar at Olmsted regardless of what classroom he was put in we would still find him or see him outside in the hallway and talk superhero’s and movies.

Sincerely, the most down-to-earth teacher you could find at Olmsted (and for me, always outside!!). Our class was so lucky to know him to graduation, and I will always remember coming home for the first Christmas after and getting stuck standing behind the processional path with him of all people at the packed OLV Midnight Mass. Getting to catch up and talk about life at such a service, there were few other times I'd felt so moved, and I'm not sure he entirely knew---but I'm so thankful that that's a memory I get to cherish, and his earnestness of character will be missed by all of us.

Mr. Fritz was my math teacher during my first year at Emerson High School in 2014. I still remember him telling me that he had seen my 8th-grade grades and had high expectations for me. I worked hard to meet those expectations, and I think I did a pretty good job.
He even wanted me to help teach some of our classmates the material we were learning. I told him I was too shy and awkward for that, and he just laughed and let it go.
Mr. Fritz was truly one of a kind. He saw potential in people before they could see it in themselves. He was one of the few teachers who genuinely cared about teaching and about his students. His encouragement, belief in me, and dedication helped shape the person I am today.
Rest easy, Mr. Fritz. You earned your rest, and your impact will never be forgotten.
