The Mercer kids lived on Kingston Place as did the Keane's at 101 Kingston Place. We all had a Keane as our best friend, me Mike had Jimmy, my sister Raylene had Mickey, and my brother Dan had Peter. We all knew the older siblings, we knew Neal was a special one even at his young age. My condolences to his family.

Uncle Neil came to my Father's (his brother Thomas) funeral and it was special that he made it there after a 20inch Snowfall hit Buffalo in November of 2014. He had the wisdom to remain in Florida to make a flight from there as he informed me that he had a bad feeling about the weather in NY. I got to witness U Neil reach into the coffin on the occasion and place a pin of a Buffalo on my Father's lapel. I have always cherished that and him allowing me to sit with fellow firefighters to tell stories in the break room downtown before he and I would go to lunch, all when I lived in West Seneca that year. Forty one years ago,we five widows climbed on a train for our trip to Albany for a wonderful tribute & dedication ceremony put on by New York State. We certainly didn’t look forward to as it was immediately after our husband‘s funeral, who were five firefighters who lost their lives in a propane explosion and of course were grieving and very sad. When I say that it turned out as good as anything could ever turn out at that stage of our lives, Neil Keane was the center of it all, being the first time the five widows were together. He made us laugh from the beginning of the trip to the end of our journey, which is what we really needed. Thank you Neil for making a dreaded experience more than delightful. I will remember it & Neil the rest of my life, Mary Lou Colpoys-Wynne

Neil was a warm, soft spoken and wonderful man. To know all the Keane families is to love them and their spirit, song, stories and care for the world! Neil has the best voice, stories and care to share. My heart goes out to Ellen and their kids and the wide Keane and Hoffsteter families in their loss.

Q: How did you meet Cornelius "Neil"?
A: My name is Peter Barber, and growing up in Buffalo I was an avid fire buff. I met Chief Keane at a fire on Niagara Street when I was 18 years old. I approached him, introduced myself and shook his hand and at that moment we immediately became friends. I was a house cat at Club Chenango where he was the 4th battalion chief. Every shift he was working thats where you would find me. He was nothing short of an amazing human being. He was always interested and inquisitive about me and the goings on in my young life which is a rare trait to have and I always looked up to him for life advice and always fascinated with his experiences in the fire service. He was a true professional through and through. With his calm demeanor, I always remembered him as the Eye of the Storm; always strong willed and calm in the midst of chaos. Yes he will be sorely missed, however, I was blessed beyond words to have known him.

I first met Neil when he was the usher in my Uncle Iggy’s section of the Aud in the golden age of college basketball. I grew to admire and respect him as the fire commissioner for Mayor Masiello. When I hear the term “gentleman,” I will always think of Neil. Condolences to his family.

Neil was a wonderful man and much loved by everyone he touched. He will be missed poolside at the 11A Glades pool in Florida. He was the a fixture in the shade, reading one of his many books. Our thoughts and prayers are with Ellen and the family.

I remember first meeting the Commissioner as a candidate for the Buffalo Fire Department. He was serious, but fair. Through my early career with him, he was always straightforward and honest. He treated me very well and made me proud to be part of the Buffalo Fire Department. His love for his large family was evident. He was proud of the Buffalo Fire Department and the Community he served. Truly a life and family of service.
