Father Dave, my heart is sad when I was informed of your passing. I will always remember and cherish your helpfulness in guiding and counseling me in my path in life. Which led to a great career with the FBI. Thank you also for your words of condolences and kindness, as you led the funeral services for my mother (Anna Cotton), my brother (William Ramos), and for my father (Candelario Ramos). Remembering also the opportunity you provided me at Saint Bridges. You were a wonderful and caring priest in our Puerto Rican Community on the West Side of Buffalo. Thank you, Father Dave. My sincere condolences to the Gallivan Family. Mike Ramos

Deeply saddened about the passing of Msgr. David Gallivan. I had the pleasure of meeting him many years ago when he baptized my best friend who was christened as an adult. He was always kind and engaging to me; as Spanish speakers, we would enjoy conversing in the language we love. I am also grateful for the many times that he and his wonderful office staff at Holy Cross would assist me with my Italian genealogy in the baptismal and wedding registers.
In these last few years, it was comforting to know that Msgr. David and my uncle, Rev. Paul Nogaro, shared time together at their Bishop Head Residence.
May God bless this wonderful servant of God. He was a blessing to so many not just here in WNY but all over the world.

Rest in eternal peace Father Dave.
Father Gallivan was at our house often to eat or have coffee with mom & our family. He looked out for us as kids on 7th Street. He was just so down to earth you wouldn’t think that he was a priest. But he was my priest for many years, he married me, baptized our children and when our mom left this earth he was there to comfort us and celebrate her life. I was shocked when I was told today of his death and now I say Adiós to his earthly body and I envision him in heaven being welcomed by mom and all his parishioners of Holy Cross Church that went home ahead of him. While you were a Monsignor to others, you will always our Father Dave.
Por favor dale un beso a mami por mi.

My wife, Irma, from Perú, always enjoyed organizing Peruvian style parties with typical South American food, drinks & lots of dancing to Latin music. Father Dave was always on the guest list, since he loved Perú, the food & music. He enjoyed mingling, speaking Spanish & dancing. These parties would typically run late. We lived in the snow belt in Elma and one year organized a party in January. So during the party it began to snow hard but nobody paid much attention. Then about midnight Father Dave announced that he had to go. After his goodbyes he drove down the street. About 20 minutes later he walked back in the house snow- covered. We were all shocked when he told us that he ran into the snow bank at the end of our street! And with that Irish smile of his he loudly said: "Don't tell the Bishop!" So, four or five men walked back to his car & dug him out & got him on his way by about 1 a.m. to go back to Buffalo. This was a running joke for many years! Thanks Fr. Dave for bringing us laughter!

I've been thinking about "Padre David" as I met him for the first time in Lima, Perú. He quickly became our good friend & married us in Irma's home in 1974. The beauty of Father Dave was his simplicity, his love of the common people, his soft-spoken spiritual nature. He was a true Buffalo -Guy priest. He baptized & married our children & oldest granddaughter, came to our picnics & Peruvian dance parties & enjoyed life. Like Christ at the wedding feast, he knew how to live & enjoy life. He led many people to Christ by his beautiful life. On his last trip to Perú, Irma and I were happy to host him in our apartment. While there, the parish (Jesus Redentor) he helped found in the 1960's, arranged for him to say Mass. The large church was packed & when he began to process from the back of the church everyone jumped to their feet, with a thunderous applause that lasted for several minutes. It was as if the Pope himself appeared in the church. You could feel the love and emotion of the people who respected and loved "Padre David" for everything he sacrificed and did for them. This was Father Dave to us all: a Christ-man, a man of God, a man who loved the people around him and led them gently to Jesus. He is still with us, guiding us to be more like him, more like Christ & help our neighbors, wherever they are...thank you God for the blessings of Father Dave!

Today, we gather to celebrate the extraordinary life of Monsignor David Gallivan, a man whose boundless compassion, unshakable faith, and selfless dedication to God and his community left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege to know him. His passing leaves a profound void, but his legacy of love and service will forever remain etched in our hearts.
Father Dave was ordained in 1966, embarking on a priestly journey that would span nearly six decades. He answered God’s call with humility and a steadfast commitment to the spiritual and emotional well-being of his parishioners. As pastor of Holy Cross Parish, he transformed the church into a sanctuary of hope, a place where all were welcomed, loved, and uplifted. His leadership was most evident during challenging times. While many feared loss and uncertainty, Father David brought courage, compassion, and clarity. He united two communities into one family of faith, fostering a spirit of unity and renewal that reflected his deep belief in the power of togetherness.
Beyond his leadership, Monsignor Gallivan was a tireless advocate for the underserved. He extended his ministry far beyond the walls of Holy Cross, reaching into Buffalo’s most vulnerable communities. Through his actions, he showed us what it means to live out Christ’s teachings—caring for the poor, lifting up the downtrodden, and reminding each person of their God-given dignity.
He was also a protector of history and tradition, ensuring that the spiritual and cultural legacy of Holy Cross Parish endured for generations. Whether preserving cherished rituals or addressing the challenges of aging infrastructure, Monsignor Gallivan worked with a vision that honored the past while building hope for the future. His influence extended beyond his parish, as he became a mentor and guide to countless young priests in the Diocese of Buffalo. Monsignor Gallivan’s wisdom and encouragement shaped the lives of those who would follow in his footsteps, ensuring that his values of humility, compassion, and faith lived on in their ministries.
Even in his later years, at Father Baker Manor, Father Gallivan continued to shine. His presence brought comfort and peace to those around him, a testament to the enduring power of his faith and his unwavering devotion to God’s call.
As we reflect on Father David Gallivan’s incredible life, we are reminded of the countless lives he touched—the people he consoled, the hearts he inspired, and the community he strengthened. He was a true servant of God, a shepherd to his flock, and a friend to all.
As we bid farewell, let us honor his memory by embodying the values he so beautifully lived—faith, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to love and serve others. Monsignor Gallivan, your work here is done, but your spirit will guide us always. May you rest in the eternal peace of God’s loving embrace.
Heavenly Father,
With hearts full of sorrow, but also gratitude, we lift up to you the soul of your faithful servant, Father David Gallivan. He walked among us as a shepherd of your flock, bringing light to the darkness, comfort to the weary, and hope to the downtrodden. His life was a living prayer, a reflection of your boundless love and mercy. Lord, as you welcome him into your heavenly kingdom, may the angels sing their songs of joy, and may his family and friends, and all the loved ones we’ve lost greet him with open arms. May he rest now in the eternal embrace of your peace, where pain and sorrow are no more, and your light shines forever.
Hold those of us who mourn his passing. Grant us the strength to carry on his legacy of kindness and faith, to live as he taught us; humbly, joyfully, and always in service to you and our neighbors. Holy Mary, Mother of God, intercede for him, as he did so often for us. Lead him to the green pastures of paradise, where the waters run pure, and the fields are rich with the beauty of God’s promise.
Grant him an eternal rest in your love and let perpetual light shine upon him.
May his soul, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
Amen.
