Peter, you stood up for Martin Luther King, Jr. and the gospel of nonviolence he preached when so many others condemned him. You were a courageous man whose legacy resides with all of us whom you inspired with your words, powerfully spoken, and your life, so well-lived. On this 50th anniversary year of being one of your students, your influence still guides me toward justice, love, mercy, compassion, and learning, learning, always learning.
Love endures ever after, Perry G. Fine, MD

I wanted to express my condolences to Professor Riga's family and friends. He was my "Contracts" Professor in Law school. He was a fascinating and wonderful man and professor. I loved his lectures so much I never missed a class! I even received The American Jurisprudence Award in Contracts. He was one of the most influential men I've ever met. GOD bless him and his family! We will miss his wisdom and kindness very much!!

I met Peter at St Cecilia CC in Houston. What great man friend &a fine example of Christian faith. I heard of Peter ' s passing late. I wished I had been to your memorial. Oh my you had my laughing or pushing my tongue into cheek w/your articles! Most of all I remember you telling me things would get better when I had been laid off & was going from job to job 1 better paying job to the next better paying job. They did. The big bear hug you gave set me on track too. My friends would attend Mass w/me & you always stuck out. Even in classes we attended together, they'd say how's that man Peter. I'd say oh he still Peter. Your bumper sticker has me cracking up when I'd drive thru Memorial Dr. Eat exercise die. I wished I could hear 1 more Alleluia from you. I know you gotta be in heaven. I can say the world misses you. RIP Peter. H

I lived at 208 Indian Church Rd at Wenro and Fr. Riga would walk Doore St up and down while reading his bible. We young girls of the neighborhood, grammar school to Jr. high, would sit on our picnic table and sing gospel songs really loud so he would hear us. They used to teach Jacob's Ladder, "Gonna Rise Up in the Chariot", and songs like that in public schools. ANyway, one day he came over and complimented us for singing to him.
Throughout my life, I am now 66, I have always wondered whatever happened to Fr. Riga. Now I know.
God rest his soul!

Dear Peter, how we will miss you at St. Cecilia in west Houston. Seeing you enter our Adoration Chapel each and every morning, saying your prayers, handing out your writings, being with you at weekday Masses are memories we will never let go. You have so many friends here in our church, dear Peter. How we will miss you, leading us in song after the weekday Mass. Surely, Father Jacques Weber, S.J. is holding a place for you nearby in heaven. May you rest in peace. We love you, Peter Riga.

Peter,
I wish I could have told you how much you mean to me and what an impact you have had on my life. You spoke of love at my wedding, you were the first person to take me on 3 mile runs, followed by an ice cream of course, the first person to have me sit down and watch Gone With The Wind....and the last, but the best and most important memories were those of you and me going to church. On the rides to and from mass, you always explained, with great passion, your love for Jesus and his undying love for us. As I matured over the next 35 years, I began to realize that one, those conversations were not just talks to pass the time but that you were introducing me to a wonderful life of knowing Jesus and two, that I have never met and probably will never know another man who would live 100% for Jesus the way you did and spoke truth the way you did and for that I am honored to have known you.
This Easter Sunday, we did not hear your glorious voice sing Hallelujah here on Earth, instead the angels were singing along with you.
Peter, I will miss your thunderous laughs, our conversations ( I think you knew I was just trying to keep up with you) and the bear hugs only you could give. The world already seems different without you here. I will never forget you. I love you and always have.
"I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die." John 11:25
See you soon,
Lesley

Dear Peter—A brilliant scholar, writer, counselor, defender— you were so many things! Above all, a man of God. You always brought a spark to any gathering from dinners on Christmas Eve to delivering a eulogy at my son’s funeral. Thank you for your help and guidance in many times of trouble. How fitting it is that you joined God in His Kingdom on the holiest of weekends! We will miss you.

A terrific man and friend with an intellectually honest soul.
His observations always prompted reflection and commentary by viewers when included in my stories at Houston's KTRK-TV, KUHT-TV and MacNeil-Leher News Hour on PBS.
He said things that needed to be said and could hold center stage as he said them.
The world is poorer for his passing.

My condolences to the Riga Family.
My prayers and thoughts.
Matthew 16:18 And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven.
