Patti touched so many lives throughout her career. Her Cerus family is deeply saddened by her passing.
Here are a few words from those of use that had the privilege of working with Patti-
Patti was a colleague and a friend who was an inspiration to us all to stay positive, always seeing opportunities instead of obstacles. Her work at Cerus was truly remarkable in that she was able to teach...and counsel... and collaborate...and celebrate each project that ensured transfusions were made safer for every patient that needed one. Her work was important. Her work made a difference. The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched – they must be felt with the heart. Patti is among the best and most beautiful souls with a heart of gold that was full of compassion. The impact Patti had on all of us will remain with us forever...and while we still wish for more time with her, we are grateful for the time we had. Even though missing her will hurt, I will always think of Patti with true joy.
-Cynthia Robbins, coworker at Cerus
We are all saddened by the news that our dear colleague and friend Patti Schmidt has passed on after a courageous fight against a reoccurrence of cancer. During this difficult time for so many, Patti’s strength, optimism, and hope, as she took on what she knew was going to be perhaps an insurmountable challenge, left me and her Cerus colleagues that knew her well in awe. We saw Patti and Mark keep moving forward every hour and every day without feeling sorry for themselves – it was truly inspiring, yet terribly sad to see such a great person being dealt such a difficult hand.
In remembering her, the one word that her Cerus teammates use to describe her most frequently is joyful. (The picture attached really embodies that!) We find the joy in this sadness by remembering Patti for how she lived her life and for the bravery she demonstrated in facing her death.
Patti truly enjoyed her time at Cerus, and we are surely indebted to her for her many contributions and for the relationships and trust that she developed with so many blood centers. We owe it to her legacy to marshal on and transform the safety of the blood supply – a cause that she was deeply committed to for cancer patients and as a nurse.
She certainly will be deeply missed by us all.
Obi Greenman-CEO of Cerus Corporation
“She was the consummate teammate, co-worker and friend.
Loved and respected by her customers as well.” - David Palmer, coworker at Cerus
“She was like sunshine. She radiated positivity and joy in every interaction and always thought of others before she thought of herself. During my first day at Cerus, Patti met me at the door and did not leave my side the entire day. She introduced me to everyone she could and made me feel immediately at home. She made Cerus feel like home. She brought light and laughter to every training she gave and would immediately gain the trust of anyone she worked with because of her warmth and spirit. By the end of just a few days at a blood center, she would leave having gained another extension of her ever-growing family. She had the unique ability to walk through life exuding style, swagger, love, and joy simultaneously. – Meredith Lummer-coworker at Cerus
Patti’s positive energy was so contagious; it was hard to be in a less than happy mood and she pulled a smile out of everyone she crossed. She was our work Mom, in every positive way - she looked out for us, encouraged us, made sure we were fed and made every effort to make people feel welcomed. She was also unconditional in her compassion towards her Cerus family and her customers alike. -Beau Robertson, coworker at Cerus
“What I remember most about Patti was her love of Buffalo especially the Bills and summer. Last summer I spent a few days with Patti in Buffalo. She was so proud of all of the parks and outdoor venues that were swarming with people. When I was there I had dinner with Patti and her husband Mark in an industrial section of town that had been reclaimed and was now a beautiful outdoor space. She took great pride in showing me the Cheerios plant and the grain silos.” - Joanne Meisner, coworker at Cerus
“If I had to sum Patti up in one word, it would be joyful. She approached everything and everyone with joy, an open heart, and a zest for life. She meant a lot to a lot of people and is already greatly missed. “ -Kathleen Rowe, coworker at Cerus
“Patti was—and always will be—our ‘work mom’. Her energy and her soul were pure and radiated kindness. She was an RN and embodied every positive attribute of a nurse; intelligence, compassion, love, generosity of heart coupled with resilience of spirit and when necessary a dose of tough love. Her deployment success came from a combination of her ability to execute and intelligence coupled with her innate ability to build strong relationships. She exuded such positivity that everyone was attracted to her, to her cause. Bar none. She was a rower—a dragon boat warrior—on a cancer survivor team encapsulated by the headline “Dragon boat races part of survivor’s plan to kick breast cancer’s butt” when featured in a local newspaper. Patti would always chip in, she felt her job was to do what needed to get done—not to stop at the boundaries of a job description—but to support her team, find and fill gaps, and solve problems before they arose. She will be deeply missed.” - Elan Weiner, coworker at Cerus

I was deeply saddened to hear about the passing of our dear friend and co-worker. She is gone from her family and friends far too soon. I will always hold my friendship with Patti as one of my greatest treasures in life. She was not only a colleague at work, but also an amazing friend...We enjoyed so many trips together where we entertained each other with work talk and personal talk and oh so many laughs! Her smile and her can-do attitude was always an inspiration, and truly supported all of us regardless of the success or failure of a project. I admired Patti's dedication to making patients lives better throughout her professional career, in particular, while at Cerus. The picture attached is Patti and I enjoying a little outdoor fun in early 2020 at a Cerus company retreat, our last trip together. After this ride, Patti danced and danced the night away...the image of her never-ending joy, like I saw that day and everyday with Patti, is what I will hold as my fondest memory of her.
Rest well my dear friend. Looking forward to kicking up our heels together again in heaven!
Love and Blessings to Mark, Meghan, Sean, Michael S., Robin, Michael K, Marianne, and all of the extended family

I met Patti when I joined the Hope Chest Dragon Boat Team. She was warm and welcoming. But I prefer my memories of her to be the silly, laughing ones. Loved by all, she always had a smile for everyone. May eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord. And let perpetual light shine upon her. Amen. My sincere condolences to her family and friends.
